Hi Supporters of Xochitl Torres Small,
Along with others, I watched Swing Left’s nationwide training last Sunday. I
learned the last 4 days before an election are the most impactful and do the
most to turn out voters. That’s Saturday, Nov. 3 through Tuesday Nov. 6
(Election Day). Watch Kerry Washington, Hilary Clinton and other celebrities
make their pitch about The Last Weekend here. Or commit to shifts in those 4
days here. Or just block off those dates on your calendar and commit in your
mind to at least one trip to Los Lunas to knock on doors and make sure folks
are going to the polls and voting.
In the meantime, every day and every weekend provides an opportunity to put
holes in your shoes and satisfaction in your heart that you’ve done your part

the 6th Xoch-Ability Award (below) will be leaving the Kmart parking lot at

Jaeger-Siegel, Winner of the 6th Xoch-Ability Award
“This is supposed to be a welcoming country,” says Leora Jaeger-Siegel. She
should know. Leora immigrated to the U.S. with her parents from Israel in 1958.
As an immigrant, Leora found doors open for her in her new country. And she has
spent her career opening doors for other people. As president of LJS Consulting
and an expert in public health and transportation, she’s opened up access to
healthcare in small, rural Hispanic and tribal communities and in Albuquerque
neighborhoods by providing expertise to local county governments.
Leora also opens doors for people into what is often the inscrutable world of
voting and politics. “I know that access is the key for many people who have
limited time and non-flexible schedules. That’s why people are really
interested in getting absentee ballots.” Leora became a Voter Registration
Agent in 2008, and has registered people -- at health clinics, grocery stores,
farmer’s markets, bus stations, naturalization ceremonies, etc.
“One thing I’ve seen is that knowing whom to vote for is an obstacle. I was
trying to register one woman who confessed to me, ‘I don’t vote because I don’t
know who to vote for.’ Lots of people don’t understand the difference between
Republicans and Democrats.
"I wish there was a simple questionnaire — maybe 5 questions to help a person
figure out which party they most closely identify with. I wish there was a
concerted effort by the Democratic Party to clarify what their positions are. I
think it would be great if there was some place — maybe during pizza parties in
neighborhoods — that people could get together and let the “political pros”
learn what concerns them. They might be surprised at some of the answers.
“I’ve gotten involved with helping ex-felons register to vote and I did that at
Civic Plaza for Albuquerque Recovery Day last week. People don’t know that
after they’ve served their time in and out of prison, they can vote. Some
people even think they can’t vote just because they’ve been arrested.
“I’ve been involved with voter registration for a long time, but this is the
first time that I’ve gone beyond registering voters to working hard for a
candidate. My sister was involved with a Swing Left candidate in California and
my daughter was involved in New York. So I looked into Swing Left here. And I
found that Xochitl Torres Small is a great candidate - an outspoken woman who
will represent us well.” (Leora’s daughter, Arielle, created this video for New
Mexico’s swing district.)
From her home in the East Mountains, Leora emails about 130 people a week,
sharing opportunities to canvass, phone bank, and raise money for Xochitl. So
far, she and her husband Malcolm have raised $1,300 of the $2,000 goal they set.
“I’m sickened by everything I see from this administration. This president has
set the country on a despicable downward path, including separating immigrant
children from their parents, deporting so many people that would make this
country a better place, making healthcare so difficult for so many people, and
negatively impacting our environment. So I’m doing whatever I can to make this
country a much better place to live.”
