BACKGROUND: The Democracy Dollars proposal is for City of Albuquerque
elections. It would streamline public funding of candidates - the money is
already in the city coffers. This proposal would send every ABQ adult a $25
voucher that they could "spend" on the candidate of their choice - mayor and
city councilors. Other U.S. cities are having great success with this system -
it enables people who are not wealthy to run for office, engages citizens in
supporting candidates, and increases voter turnout!
In ABQ for several months now, hundreds of volunteers (including me) and
workers got nearly 30,000 signatures to request this proposal be on the
November ballot for voters to decide. That's more than enough signatures. The
people have spoken!
This is the odd part - Bernalillo County "owns" the ballot for November so the
County Commissioners decide what gets on the ballot. And even though we have
all the required signatures - they voted no. At last week's meeting, several of
the Commissioners flipped their votes at the last minute and voted NO. In
effect - they are denying citizens the right to VOTE on this ballot initiative.
