Your Voice Can Make A Difference!
There are a number of bills relevant to food and agriculture in New Mexico
that our state House and Senate Appropriators will be determining funding
levels for TOMORROW, Feb. 21. This is an important time to reach out to
legislators on the House Appropriations Committee and Senate Finance Committee.
If any of the following House and Senate bills align with your values and
vision for New Mexico, you should call each of the appropriators' offices today
to voice your support. Legislators are often moved to take action by as few as
ten calls of support to their office!
Broadly speaking, the following bills will:
1. Enhance children's diets, promoting healthier lifestyles and increasing
academic achievement
2. Increase access to NM-grown fruits and vegetables for children and
low-income seniors, and
3. Promote and strengthen NM's farming economy and rural sectors by expanding
market opportunities.
The first slate of House Bills (HB) are pertinent to House Appropriations
Committee members. You can find these legislators' contact information below.
These are followed by Senate Bills (SB) that are pertinent to Senate Finance
Committee members.

House Bills
HB 125: Providing Food & Agriculture Experiential Learning Grants to Schools
Requests $350,000 in funding for schools to provide a wide variety of
agriculture/garden/food related programming
HB 204: Healthy Soil Act
Requests $1,200,000 to educate farmers, ranchers, and the public about
agricultural practices that build organic matter and capture carbon in New
Mexico soils, as well as a small grant program to assist producers to these
ends.
HB 315: NM Agricultural Workforce Development Program Act
Requests $250,000 for a farm internship program
HB 327: Develop Market Opportunities for Farmers, Ranchers, and Agribusiness in
NM
Requests $250,000 for farm, ranch, and agribusiness promotion and development
HB 328: Procurement of NM Grown Fruits and Vegetables for School Meals
Requests $350,000 funding for schools to purchase New Mexico grown fruits and
vegetables for school meals |
