I am not familiar with the difference since I am not much of a long wheelbase S
class sort of person...
OTOH since low weight is the most important chassis parameter a lighter car
would indeed almost certainly be much quicker and better handling.

The 300 SEL 6.3 was substantially lighter, with a better p/w ratio, and was
generally regarded as faster.
