Yes, as subject, I think you'll tend to watch the white bright circle even if the photographer says nothing, While it's easy to get a sharp image with the secondary mirror, it's not so easy to get your wanted framing because you can perceive the mirror inclination and the up/down inverted image can be confusing as a whole. Perhaps the circle also gave confidence to the photographer regarding the spot where the subject/s were looking when he used the secondary mirror if he selected that circle as reference.
