While element thickness is often the least critical of dimensions
it is still important. To some degree element spacing can be used to
compensate, that is probably what is meant by collimating.
I was probably using the wrong word...I meant any necessary
adjustment of shims between optical cell and focusing mount so
infinity focus is still correct in the event of the polishing making
a small change in backfocus.
There is a lot of hand work involved so I think John van
Stelten's prices are probably reasonable for what he offers. I would
be suspicious of prices as cheap as the Tasmanian ones you quote.
I think prices cheap because they are simply dealing with the bare
lens element, and take no responsibility beyond that. John's prices
include dealing with the lens as a whole; and making it good
afterwards. This could involve machining if backfocus needs to be
shortened, as Leitz lenses typically don't have shims to adjust.
If anyone knows about the construction of a collapsible
summicron...whether there's shims or such in there that a civilian
could get to...I'd be glad to hear about it.
I wonder what the physical process of "repolishing" actually consists of?
