This topic has come up recently. My response was:

Should be comparable. I have used several over decades and found them to vary from one sample to another. The better ones are equal to the Xenar, which also has sample variations, but not as much.

To add: This is based on non-protocol comparisons among @ 8 Y'mats and 14 Xenar equipped Rolleis I have used over decades, not all belonging to me. The first Lumaxar I used was awful, the next quite good, the rest all over the lot. I was never in a position of making side by side comparisons, but my impression was that the good ones were comparable to the average Xenar in sharpness, contrast and "character.". There were variations among my Xenars too, but they were more consistent except for two, which were thrilling. One I stupidly sold off before realizing not all Xenars performed to that standard, the other, after three decades, I now own :-).

Yashicas are pleasant to use and capable of acceptable results, with the right sample. I never liked them. Mine were in the repair shop more than all of my other cameras combined, even though I used them much less. Most of the problems came from the winding mechanism and various linkages. It always made me slightly apprehensive while using them, that maybe they would break down in the middle of a shoot, as occasionally they did.

But the (better) lenses were okay, also the shutters.

Came across something interesting. Early YashicaMats had a lens called
a Lumaxar. This was allegedly a German made lens imported by Yashica
to build their early TLRs. Later they made the Yashinon and no longer
imported the Lumaxar. I can find very little information on this lens.
It is suppose to be a Tessar-type. Of course there is all the BS on
the groups that posted how good the lens is, but that is mostly by
owners of the lens who compare it to nothing.
Any information is appreciated.
