I also find the EVS system on earlier Rolleiflexes, like the 2,8E Planar,
rather useless. Probably the reason I sold the 2.8E(2?) Xenotar I bought later.
My 3.5E Xenotar does not have it and I don’t miss it. Looks like the late Baby
4x4 I am eyeing has it though.

I have always had my battles with the Rollei cameras that featured the
EVS system. My own opinion is that it's a complication or dubious
value, and the iris had to be simplified to 5 blade to accommodate.
Same with the built-in meters.
I am still preferential to my 2.8C Planar... no EVS, no meter, complex iris.

Carlos, Javier, David,
Thanks for the responses. In combination, they covered everything I was
wondering about. I am grateful to those who are willing to rehash subjects
that have probably been discussed before.
It is an enjoyable distraction to read and research the fine old cameras.
Questions occur to me that are hard to find specific answers for.
My most modern Rollei is a rather shabby 2.8D Planar. Fortunately, the
camera does function properly, and all the critical components, e.g. lens,
screen, mechanical function, have managed to come out of its obvious
hard-use in pretty good shape. But it IS rough. So, I have been thinking a
lot about an upgrade. The GX questions came out of that thinking.
The problem is that it is pretty hard to experience the different models. It
also has to do with words like “refined:” The 2.8F, being the last model, is
often described as being the most refined model. I wonder if this is
strictly in the sense that it has the greatest feature set, or if it also
includes refinement of mechanical function, e.g. smoother, quieter, more
reliable? If it is the latter, I am all in. But if it is just more complex,
I am not so sure. One hears/reads the sad stories about the final demise of
Rollei and wonders if the Rollei tooling of the F era was capable of
producing at the same tolerances of the C and D eras. Was quality control
lower as a result of financial constraints?
Sorry, It is a rainy Saturday morning. Nobody down at the local breakfast
place is going to want to talk about Rollies. This is my only outlet.
Thanks again,
Wayne---
