Going from the days of turning on the organ blower, waiting for wind pressure from the blower to make the reservoir top raise up against its springs or brick weights, which tripped the switch to turn on the DC rectifier to give current to the console...took more than a couple of seconds., Turn off the organ during the sermon and have to start a hymn in a hurry coming out of the sermon was always an embarrassing red-faced wait. Then electronic organs came along that at first took a couple of seconds for the tubes to warm up and then, with transistors, started playing immediately. But these organs took electronic sounds and modified them to simulate pipe sounds. Today's digital organs play sampled recordings of organ sounds...but take a bit longer to start. During a press conference for an early prototype digital organ once upon a time, things went well until the power at the hotel failed momentarily and the organ stopped playing and then when power came back on the organ proceeded to make some rather unmusical sounds as the computer reorganized itself and rebooted. That's when the need for a MUTE circuit became obvious, and most instruments include circuitry that prevents a fast surge of power to extend the longevity of components. Rodgers newest amplifiers employ some sophisticated circuitry that protects speakers, a good thing to know. In today's Rodgers Organs, when you turn on the organ it boots the computer and prior to being ready to play it does at least two things: Loads the voicing for your room and creates the random tuning? for your playing enjoyment, each time you turn the organ on.
