Hi, Matt.

Can't answer on the 525, but it sure seems like an important stop to be =
missing.

I owned a 770 at one time (little brother to the 840), and it also had the =
Trompette borrowed to 16' in the Great, and all the pedal reeds were =
borrowed.

In the analog days, Rodgers and others were pretty stingy with the reeds, =
especially on the Great. Part of it was a carry over from organ fashions =
stemming from before the 50's before Orgelbewegung took hold in the US. In =
those days, many organs had no reeds on the great. Part because to do the =
reeds right in analog required a separate keyer that was more expensive =
than for flutes & diapasons.

This explains the borrowed pedal reeds, but not the 16' Great Trompette, =
which I have never understood. Without a 16' flue of some sort, the reed =
sticks out like a sore thumb. Maybe one of the designers at the factory =
had some piece where it really worked, or maybe the plan was to use it =
with swell couplers & great stops.

On the 770 & 840, though, you could set most stops to a soft or loud =
setting from the front of the console. Set the Swell for a loud Trompette =
16' and the Great for soft (or vice versa). With this approach there might =
be some little use for the separate 16' trompette on the great.

But for me, I've always thought it would be more useful at 8'. They =
finally did that on the 760 which came out 3 or 4 years after the 770 & =
840. Maybe they listened to their dealers?

Charlie

While sitting at my 525 I began to wonder about something I never =
really=20
understood. Why is there no 4' Flute in the Swell? I find this rather =
odd.=20
Every model above the 525 has a 4' Flute in the Swell. To me this seems =
like=20
an odd stop to leave off. Why was this done?

My next two questions came while looking at the stop list for the =
Windsor=20
840. Why is the only reed on the Great a 16' Contre Trompette borrowed =
from=20
the Swell? I would think that if the only reed on the Great was going to =
be=20
borrowed, it would at least have been at 8'. Also, why are the only reeds =
in=20
the Pedal borrowed from the Swell? To me this seems to be another odd =
choice=20
in a Rodgers stop list.

If anybody could explain the reasoning behind these questions I'd =
really=20
appreciate it. An inquiring mind would like to know.
