'Remembering John Denver' stars Ted Vigil at Danbury's Palace Theatre

Singer/musician Ted Vigil pays tribute to John Denver at Danbury's Palace
Theatre on Oct. 13, 2018.
Fans of the late John Denver know there's a beautiful park in Aspen, Colo.,
where memorial stones are etched with the words to some of his beloved hits,
such as "Rocky Mountain High." One stone simply says, "John Denver
Sanctuary," followed by words urging visitors to reflect on and enjoy the
earth, mountains, water and sky.
When singer/songwriter Ted Vigil first visited, he took out his guitar to
play some of the songs he came across. A large crowd grew around him; people
were mesmerized because Vigil looks and sounds so much like Denver. It was
as if he'd come back.
Though Denver died in a 1997 crash (while flying his experimental plane),
his memory lives on through such tunes as "Annie's Song" and "Take Me Home,
Country Roads." Vigil has spent the last 10 years paying tribute to the
"Sunshine" singer in shows across the country, and even toured with Denver's
former lead guitarist, Steven Weisberg.
"I think the thing that strikes me the most about John is how much he deeply
cared about the planet, about all wildlife, every living creature, and you
can hear that in his music," said Vigil, who lives in Washington state. He
brings his show, "Remembering John Denver" to Danbury's Palace Theatre on
Saturday, Oct. 13.
"Some people say I look a lot like John and sound a lot like him, so they
can expect to kind of go back in time a little and enjoy some of their
favorite hits," Vigil said in a phone chat. "I tell a couple stories about
John and his music, and how the songs were written and why."
Vigil said he also shares a little about his experience touring with
Weisberg, who passed away in 2014, and things he learned about Denver while
he and Weisberg were on the road. Though Vigil never got to meet Denver, he
did meet some of his family, including his mother, and even sang for her.
"I spoke with Steve on these long car rides and he would tell me about
John... and their experiences going from city to city." Weisberg said Denver
was a kind and generous man, and when it came time to fly the band, they
always flew first class.
"That is something I wasn't able to do for Steve," Vigil said, with a laugh.
"On certain occasions John would fly his girlfriend or spouse to fun places
like Hawaii or Tahiti... That is something John wouldn't necessarily say in
an autobiography..."
Born Henry John Deutschendorf Jr., Denver was an actor, activist and
humanitarian as well as a musician. By 1974, he was established as one of
the country's top artists. His greatest hits album was one of the first in
the world to sell more than 10 million copies.
Vigil said one question he is often asked about Denver's music concerns
"Rocky Mountain High," and whether it refers to weed or just grooving on
nature. "He wrote it about watching a meteor shower, 'fire in the sky,'
while camping with friends... As far as getting high, smoking pot or
whatever, I don't know... You're high in the mountains. You're high on life.
There might have been a pipe passed around that night..."
