at XPRS. It's an automatic parachute release called the Raven Automatic
Parachute Release (RAPR). The device goes inline with the parachute and
will release the chute upon landing. You can imagine at Blackroc with the
winds it would be nice to not have your rocket dragged for miles and
miles. Also once a parachute is released it can not really inflate
efficiently. It could still blow some but it will ball up in most cases
and can't get far. I have attached a picture and a product overview.
I'll have a number of these for testing for free... In fact it's better
than free... I'm offering flyers a $25 store credit if you give it a test
fly. Some more details:
1 - The recovery weight needs to be no less than 7 lbs, and no more
than 100 lbs.
2 - It's for use on the main parachute only, no drogue chutes,
streamers, or between upper and lower airframe. I will review each use to
be sure it's applicable.
3 - It can not be used with reefing devices like the Jolly release,
tender descender, or the cable cutter.
4 - It can be used with anyones parachutes.
5 - You can fly it wind or not. Obviously if there is wind that is the
ideal use case.
6 - Ideally it's a flight I can actually watch so flights under 5K are
best.
How it works is see me with your rocket you want to use it on. I'll
review and make sure it's a good application of the device. I'll supply a
unit configured for use with quick links if needed. Just clip it in line
with your main parachute. After landing take a photo of the device at the
landing site, both the uniot and the parachute. A perspective photo is
also good. Of course I'm interested if the release works, or if it still
held. Bring it back and I'll give you a credit. You can use the credit at
the launch, or as a store credit at a later date.
Unless you mess with the device after I give it to you, it's more
likely to not release on landing than it is to release early in the air.
But since this is testing, and there is always risk, I do not guarantee
performance. That is why I'm offering a per-test store credit!
