What Allen said was all good stuff. Another area of scratch building you
may want to tackle at some point is the fiber-glassing of airframes and
fins. If I am not using fiberglass tubing, I prefer using the phenolic
tubing rather than cardboard tube. However, both phenolic and cardboard
are so much better if you put a layer or two of fiberglass around them. It
gives the cardboard much needed strength and durability and it gives the
phenolic flexibility (it tends to be brittle). Putting a layer of
fiberglass along the fin/airframe joint adds strength to the joint.

Max and I are exploring the options for a project for November’s ROCstock
that we will start working on together over his summer break. Any tips on
how to get started building from scratch? We have been playing with
OpenRocket (thank you Chis and Phil) and I see that Apogee Components has a
lot of parts available.
