Wednesday, April 1, 7:00 pm 2nd Annual World Poetry Night in the Oral Tradition The Mechanics' Institute 57 Post Street, San Francisco (between Market and Kearny Streets) An exhilarating evening of poetry from diverse cultures and times. Maurice Wren and his ensemble of presenters, including Bill Denham, Doug von Koss and Barry and Maya Spector, will be reciting all poetry from memory. The evening follows the format of an Oral Traditions Salon where the poems flow with a thread connecting each poem recited. Hear and enjoy the inspiring works of Rumi, Sappho, Hafiz, Kabir, Burns, Tennyson, Whitman, Shakespeare, Yeats, Jeffers, Dickinson, Oliver, Berry, Collins, Stafford, and more! BILL DENHAM is a southern born and raised Berkeley man. Father, poet, carpenter and letter press printer. Bill both recites and writes poetry and has been part of the Noah Project and the Redwood Men's Conference for many years. His passion for the spoken word and poetry was kindled by hearing a poem recited, in his case Mary Oliver's The Journey. DOUG VON KOSS is the artistic director of The Noah Project, a men's ritual performance group in the Bay Area. As a radiant elder in the men's movement he participates in spoken word performances from coast to coast. He teaches regularly at Robert Bly's Great Mother Conference and The Minnesota Men's Conference. For more information on events and schedules, see www.dougvonkoss.com BARRY and MAYA SPECTOR Barry writes about American history and politics from the perspectives of myth and archetypal psychology. He is seeking a publisher for his book, Madness at the Gates of the City: The Myth of American Innocence. Maya is a children's librarian, storyteller, poet, ritualist, certified SoulCollage facilitator and member of a women's circle meeting weekly since 1984. She has a book on the Goddess Persephone in progress. Barry and Maya have performed in The Great Night of Rumi, Rumi's Caravan and The Great Night of Soul Poetry, regular celebrations of recited poetry and music, for many years. Hear them and others reciting poetry at www.dzola.com/berkeley_poetry_hear.asp Feeling that the revival of spoken poetry and storytelling is a key to cultural renewal, they present Oral Traditions Poetry Salons at their Menlo Park home (the only rule is no reading!) and conduct an annual Day of the Dead grief ritual in early November. To get on their email list and read their essays and poetry, see www.barryandmayaspector.com MAURICE WREN is a long time Oakland resident from Australia. Poetry was not part of his interests until hearing it recited by men and woman of passion at poetry and ritual events around the Bay Area. His love of singing and poetry have been fed by his long time involvement in the Noah Project, he is also an avid Argentine Tango dancer. Poets who continue to influence and "work" him are Rumi, Hafiiz, David Whyte, Mary Oliver, Billy Collins and Yehuda Amichai, to name a few.
