Gmail and google is now offering 2 factor security for those who choose
to enable this feature.
Two Factor security is based on the concept of something only you should
know, like your password and something only you should have like your
cell phone.
Once things are setup, when you log-on to your gmail account on the web
site, you enter your username and password, press enter then a six digit
code is sent to your cell phone as a text message. You then enter this
code and you are verified and in your account. Google does offer the
option to call your cell phone or whatever number you desire and give
you the six digit code that way.
In the process of setting all of this up you are given 10 codes that
will work one time each. So if you forget your password or lose your
phone, you can get into your account and make any needed changes.

For those of us who use Thunderbird, outlook express, or another email
client to access our gmail messages you can setup a randomly generated
code to use in place of the pop or smtp or imap passwords in your email
program. That way your actual password is not being used to access your
mail.

If anyone is interested in setting this up you can find the option under
your account settings on the gmail page. They walk you through step by
step and it takes about 15 minutes to complete everything.
