It is not really a battery pack, I believe that the wires are soldered in, 
so you may need to snip the wires, and if you have to do that, snip them 
close to the batteries.
I have done this, but it has been a while.

I have had quite a lot of success having batteries built for me
and certainly MUCH cheaper than sending the unit in would be.
Just take the battery pack out tell them you want a new one
built.  They'll do it for you.  Cost about 30 bucks! And at least
in this particular instance they don't need to know what it's
for.
