      XP Question Corner

Do I have to have Adobe?

      QUESTION:
I don't like Adobe as a company, and I don't like the Adobe Reader
(used to be Acrobat Reader) on my machine because of all the security issues
and constant updates. But of course lots of web sites put documents up in
PDF format so I have to have some way to read those. Is there a free
alternative to Adobe or am I stuck? Thanks. - Mark L.

      ANSWER:
Although many folks think PDF and Adobe are inextricably entwined and
that you have to have Adobe's software to read the format, there are
actually a number of alternate PDF readers and some of them are far more
functional than Reader. The one I use is called PDF XChange Viewer and it
not only allows you to view PDF files but also lets you do simple editing:
add comments, text, notes, draw and highlight and more. I also like that it
will integrate with translation software. With this program, you no longer
have to have Adobe's Reader installed on your machine at all. You can
download it at
