Hi Jose, I will say that while VoiceOver on the Mac is not perfect, it does allow for very efficient composing and reading of email, creation, formatting and spell checking of documents compatible with Microsoft Word, surfing the web, not using the same techniques as JFW or Window-Eyes, but very very useable. Many accessible programs exist, the Mac version of Skype, Sound Studio for recording, and a brilliantly accessible PDF reader as part of the operating system. There are still some access issues. Apple still has not made its own I tunes program accessible, a program used by more than 90% of everyone who has ever thought of using am MP3 player. Garage Band and ProTools, which are both premier multi-track recording programs, are simply not accessible to VoiceOver. And right now, there is not yet an acdcessible spreadsheet program. But, even as it stands right now, VoiceOver comes shipped with every Mac, making it potentially the most widely distributed screen reader in the world. And of course, there's no comparison between VoiceOver and Narrator. And the next version is slated to have many many new features, and as you heard, the new voices. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jose" <crunch1@xxxxxxxxx> To: <real-eyes@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, September 05, 2006 8:01 PM Subject: [real-eyes] Re: Apple's New Voices I am so mad. why is it the little computer company with a much smaller cash base can out speak microsoft. Lately I have been having to revert to narrator and microsoft should be ashamed of themselves for making that voice so horrible. how dare they. Ok g2g before I get on my soap box. I know it's o t. sometimes I want to buy an apple just to support them because of the way they go the extra mile for the Blind. From Jose "I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go; I will counsel you with My eye upon you." Psalm 32:8 Programmers do it bit by bit. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim Fettgather" <jim@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <real-eyes@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, September 05, 2006 6:27 PM Subject: [real-eyes] Apple's New Voices > If you click on the following link, you should hear a portion of Steve > Jobs' keynote speech during which he demonstrates a new voice for Apple's > next system release. > The next operating system will be called Lepoard, and is due to be out > some time next year. > I was particularly impressed at the quality of the new voice, dubbed Alex, > even at faster rates. > > http://zdnet.com.com/1606-2-6103740.html > > > To subscribe or to leave the list, or to set other subscription options, > go to www.freelists.org/list/real-eyes > To subscribe or to leave the list, or to set other subscription options, go to www.freelists.org/list/real-eyes To subscribe or to leave the list, or to set other subscription options, go to www.freelists.org/list/real-eyes
