You have to wonder if the Keystone XL pipeline cancellation didn't play
into this proposed merger. The pipeline's chief purpose was to move
Canadian shale oil to Texas refineries. By combining with KCS, CP will
have a straight shot to move Canadian shale oil to Texas by rail with no
pipeline competition. That is until the first derailment fire and the
environmental zealots start fussing about how dangerous transporting oil
by rail is.
