There are data recovery tools for just about any common OS/FS
combination, though some are better than others.
Though, back in the 90s, I was playing around with an old DOS machine
tucked away in the small library of my dorm building at the school for
the blind I attended for most of my k-12 education, and accidentally
hit enter prematurely typing out a full path for the deltree
command... if you don't know, deltree was like rmdir, but it would
happily delete non-empty directories along with all their
subdirectories and all files therein without so much as an "are you
sure?" Ended up hosing the whole system. Fortunately, the thing was so
old that the resident computer geek(e.g. me) was the only one who even
cared about the thing, and I suspect the only reason it hadn't been
trashed is that no one with the authority to have it done could be
bothered. I believe that was before I had ever heard of Linux, batch
files, or shell scripts.
More recently, I was cleaning out some of the junk that accumulates in
hidden directories in my home directory and accidentally deleted my
~/.mozilla folder, wiping out my Firefox profile. Ended up booting the
LiveDVD I use as a rescue dis, backing up my system drive, restoring
an older backup, copying an older version of ~/.mozilla to removable
media, restoring the new backup, copying the old ~/.mozilla back in,
booted back into my main system and then had to deal with recreating a
month's worth of lost bookmarks, deleting a month's worth of obsolete
bookmarks, and dealing with the cookies that are actually important
being a month out of date. Not as bad as having to redo a Firefox
profile from scratch, but still annoying.
And fairly recently, my second largest SD card got busted...
Fortunately, most of what was on it was stuff that was also on my main
data drive and my largest SD card... Unfortunately, due to my Data
drive running low on space and lack of funds to upgrade, there was
some stuff only on the SD cards, and about 6GB of stuff only on the
busted SD card... 6GB that can be recovered via a download, but a
painful reminder that it could have been much worse... and it means
I'm down a copy of everything else that was on that card... down to
one copy in some cases... Wish I could afford to upgrade both my
internal and external data drives to 4TB a piece and buy several spare
512GB SD cards... and that I had the spare outlets to keep my external
drives hooked up and ready to be powered on and recieve new data from
my internal drives on a regular basis instead of staying packed away
most of the time and thus only current for the files that are oldest
and change the least.
