Hi,
For only console access, ripping out pulse audio should not be a problem. A
better solution would be to use the spd-conf tool and to create your own
speech-dispatcher configuration. You can tell it what audio output to use.

In a message on the Speakup list, I red "Dump pulseaudio, and setup
speech-dispatcher to output using libao" as a means to resolve Speakup
issues.
Assuming I'd be using Raspios-Buster lite, & assuming I only intend to use
this pi in console mode, am I going to loose any functionalities if I get
rid of PulseAudio?, especially given the fact that I want to play audio
files as part of an hourly clock application?
Also, if I could go with that option, how would I adapt Speakup &
SpeechDispatcher to do that?
