To show only what's available on your root partition try
df -h /
If this is the same number as you get from
df -h /home
Then it's all on one partition and that number is how much space you have.

space or what.
How do I determine what space is on the hard drive, what space the
operating system is using, and expand the hard drive to fit the operating
system?
My apologies for my lack of knowledge in this matter.
