Hi,
I have an idea for a Raspberry PI project, and I'm not quite sure where
to go with it. I know similar things have been done with PIs, but I'm
more of a software guy than a hardware guy.
My wild and crazy idea is a Raspberry PI-based musical doorbell. We've
always had a musical doorbell in our house, and it has the following
features, as many of which as possible I'd love to see in my project.
A selection of tunes to be played, selection being done via an
integrated keypad.
An integrated speaker, plus hookups for external speakers. We have one
outside the front door so the person ringing the doorbell can hear the
song, and one upstairs so someone there can hear the doorbell.
I've theorized far enough to realize that a Raspberry PI with its audio
output hooked up to some sort of amplifier circuit, and with a
pushbutton wired to GPIO pins, along with a script probably written in
Python to handle the software side of things would fit the bill. What
I'm not sure about is the other hardware. Is there such a thing as a
project box with Raspberry PI hookups? Probably not, but it'd be nice.
Have any of you on this list done anything like this? Obviously I'd need
some sighted help with wiring, soldering, etc. Are there such things as
USB keypads that would work with the PI, or would I be better off to
build some sort of web/telnet/etc. server for changing tunes and/or any
other options I come up with. Am I totally off my rocker?
Thanks for any thoughts or pointers.
Jayson
