A crystal ball look at Radio Astronomy's future: "The Virtual Sky"

Hello Radio Astronomers,

Ray P. Norris wrote an interesting paper for the "Accelerating the Rate of
Astronomical Discovery" Special Session of the IAU General Assembly,
recently held in Rio de Janeiro:
http://arxiv.org/abs/1009.6027

He states:

"Fundamental changes are taking place in the way we do astronomy. In twenty
years time, it is likely that most astronomers will never go near a
cutting-edge telescope, which will be much more efficiently operated in
service mode.

They will rarely analyze data, since all the leading edge telescopes will
have pipeline processors. And rather than competing to observe a
particularly interesting object, astronomers will more commonly group
together in large consortia to observe massive chunks of the sky in
carefully designed surveys, generating peta bytes of data daily."

Fig. 2 shows the placement of many large surveys in a sky coverage versus
sensitivity plot, and the future for the Square Kilometre Array.

He comments about education and outreach, the Galaxy Zoo, SETI at Home,
publishing and the referee system, papers published in very expensive
journals, and other interesting topics.

I enjoyed reading it.

Best regards,

Victor
