I just spoke with Calu from Queer Newham, they were really keen on the idea and
had some really useful advice regarding the funding application!
They are keen to meet with us as soon as possible to talk through some of the
logistics, as their weekend is tight and I told them that the deadline is this
weekend. Eddie would you still be available for a zoom chat this afternoon
around 5pm?
Any other volunteers wanting to help and collaborate are very welcome to join
and contribute ideas too!

That’s very exciting that Queer Newham are interested in joining forces, hope
the chat with Calu goes well!
Would be up for being part of a zoom chat about this, I can be free Wednesday
eve between 5-7pm or Thursday 9.30pm+ (Also free in the morning both those days
as it’s my weekend!)
Cheers,

Eddie, this is incredible!
Queer Newham have expressed an interest in collaborating, we're looking to
organise a time (hopefully this afternoon) to call and speak with someone
called Calu (pronouns unknown) and see if they are aware of the event and fill
them in to see how likely they are to be available for this between
Sept-December.
Hopefully we can confirm their support and collaboration (whatever that may
look like), and then start piecing together your ideas and any further ideas,
and what that might logistically look like. Perhaps if we give ourselves until
Thursday this week to figure out these details and then I'm happy to spend
Friday/Saturday making sure that it's all mentioned on the funding form before
submitting?
Not sure what your availability is like this week but if you and any other
volunteers and anyone from Queer Newham who want be involved at this point
wanted to have a pm zoom meet up to talk through plans, I would be available,
if it would be useful? I would be free Wednesday or Thursday night after 5pm
All funding looks to be dependent on us having a written constitution which we
currently don't have so Holly is putting that together as we speak to then
circulate with all volunteers
It's all go!

Hey Kyle and all,
I am having a bit of trouble with Google docs at the moment so not sure if
anyone has already started editing/contributing to this Royal Docks app yet -
I have read through the brochure for applicants and the example application and
used all their hints about what they are looking for to come up with a slightly
more fleshed out concept for a project around the 'Message in a bottle' theme
(see below).
Completely fine for this to be ripped up / altered in any and all ways
imaginable or completely discarded in exchange for other ideas! Just thought it
might be good for us to start with agreeing an overall project concept before
trying to co edit the application, so we are all on the same page - i just
wrote all this so we would have something to start with. There's a fair amount
of 'saying what they want to hear' going on here so apologies in advance for
bits that sound super cringey or random!

Message In a Bottle – a zine making & trading project to support creativity,
connection and wellbeing for LGBTQIA+ folks and allies in Newham and beyond.
The history of the Royal Docks centres on being a place of perpetual trade and
exchange. We will give this history a newly intimate and personal
re-incarnation in the form of an organized zine making & trading event centred
on connecting Newham residents with each other and beyond! The 'Message in a
Bottle' theme reflects the particular emotive power of perzines (personal
zines), especially in a time of isolation – whether this is the isolation of
lockdown or of the feeling of being 'different.' Participants in our project
will be supported to make anonymous zines inspired by personal stories or
experiences and then enjoy the hopefulness and solidarity of sending it out to
reach unknown readers.
Participants could mail (and/or email) zines to QZL team, which could then lead
to multiple outcomes:
* scanned and posted up onto online platform/ web exhibition & social media?
* physically shuffled up and reposted out again to the participants so
everyone who mailed something gets another thing in return – we could partner
with local libraries so that zine making instructions could also be posted
physically, to make the project more accessible for older residents and those
who cannot access online/streaming resources and events. instruction/resources
could also be sent to local sixthform/youth groups as a resource for them to
get young people involved, to further extend intergenerational reach of this
creative opportunity and skill sharing.
* displayed in physical bottle installation(s) in a Royal Docks site at the
water's edge eg Royal Victoria Gardens / Thames Barrier Park? This would
further extend the reach of the project and re-invent these public municipal
spaces as places of playful discovery, curiousity and creative inspiration. Eg
large sweetshop plastic jars hung from trees, or recycled bottles..?
online events: live streamed zine workshops to teach practical skills of making
a zine (eg from folding an a4 page) as well as live streamed readings from
established zine makers and/or 'show and tell' explorations of the QZL
collection with a focus on perzines and inspiration on how to use zines as a
way of expressing personal experiences & emotions in a creative format.
Build on our connections to local creative networks such as East London Comics
and Art Festival and Rabbit Road Press (Manor Park) - both to showcase a
diverse source of local workshop/zine reading event leaders and to inspire
participants to discover these groups as future resources for community
building and creative inspiration. This would support and develop the capacity
of the local cultural sector through local production, development and
networking.
We would aim to partner with Queer Newham to help reach LGBTQIA+ residents of
Newham and encourage them to take part in the activities. Queer Newham has
built fantastic local relationships through their touring exhibition in local
libraries in collaboration with Newham Poetry Group for LGBTQ+ history month
and would bring a wealth of local knowledge and events/exhibition experience to
this project. Local libraries, youth groups, and other community hubs would
also be approached to help spread the word and increase participation.
Though it would centre queer voices and feature queer-identified workshop
leaders, the project would actively engage participants across all genders and
sexualities including the straight and cis identified, making it a wonderful
space for gentle learning and empathy across identity boundaries. We would
actively focus on engaging participants from a diverse range of religious and
ethnic groups, as well as making sure the paid online workshop leaders also
reflected this diversity, not least because this is an important form of
representation. This would support the vision laid out by Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz
earlier this year, when Newham became the first London Borough to fly the newly
inclusive 'Progress Pride Flag': “We send out an important message. Newham is
open. It is a place where you are free to be whoever you want, and free to love
whoever you want.”

Quick update:
Holly has emailed Queer Newham to see if they would be interested and available
to partner with us for this project and
I have uploaded the example copy of the small grant application
form<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1C1FEKqP4D69wcME4NjfQszNaTwQZbezx/view?usp=sharing>
to google drive for us to start editing.

Ahhhh yeah they are brilliant ideas! I like them a lot, I'll download the
application then and make a start tomorrow.
I think it's an annual event, so even if we aren't successful this year,
hopefully we can try again next year too!

Love these ideas for programming!! All I could think of was some form of zine
making workshop but your ideas for linking this more to royal docks are PERFECT!
It would be great to reach out to queer Newham to see if we can collaborate. I
can send them a message now to put feelers out.
I think the upcoming deadline is a bit tight but like you and Kyle say it would
be a good test run and if we aren't successful perhaps it's just good practice
for funding apps in future.

Hey Kyle,
That meeting with Ajay looked super productive, thanks for sharing the notes!
I am up for helping with fundraising and/or event planning if I can be useful,
23rd is pretty soon but as you say could be a fun test run?
Some initial hurried thoughts on what direction to take the Royal Docks app:
- RD seem keen on prioritising both collaborative work and Newham based
organisations: is it worth reaching out to Queer Newham to see if they wanted
to partner on something..? https://queernewham.weebly.com/about.html
- A couple of quick random ideas for themes linking QZL to Royal Docks site:
‘message in a bottle’ perzine workshops making something in isolation and
sending it out to connect with unknown readers..?
Fluidity - making zines about flux and change inspired by queer river/water
mythologies & histories (queer /gender bending sailors, mermaids etc)

Hey everyone!
This message is aimed at a few of you who expressed an interest in helping to
explore funding opportunities for Queer Zine Library, or anyone interested in
event planning, so if that's not your thing feel free to delete or look away
now 😂
I just wanted to share with you all some notes I took from a chat I had today
with someone called Ajay Pabial - see below. He runs a service called Art
Clubbers <https://www.artclubbers.com/> which supports underrepresented young
Londoners gain access into the creative sector.
He was very nice and filled me in on some of the basics of what sort of funds
we should be looking at and what sorts of things we should think to include in
our funding applications, alongside any essential details asked for. Feel free
to read the notes and make any comments if you have any further ideas or can
think of any examples we might want to use?
One of the funding opportunities (Join the
Docks<https://www.royaldocks.london/opportunity/join-the-docks-2020>) has a
deadline on 23rd August and I think it might be fun to have a crack at it and
treat it as a practice exercise. If anyone wants to help me write that funding
application, let me know and I'll download and make the doc shareable so anyone
can input ideas of what to include. If successful it would mean running some
online events from September so if anyone after reading the funding criteria
can think of types of events we might want to virtually run, feel free to
comment or email back with suggestions!
