Hello,
I am trying to start the class on Introduction to Computer Science Using
Python. However the tool they say to download and use to do your programming
with is not accessible on either Mac or Windows. I am trying to get Emacs and
Emacspeak working on my Mac But am not having much luck right now. I may end up
having to use VS Code on windows to take the course. Other than this problem
this edX is a great resource.

Hi Stephanie,
This is indeed exceptional information! I listened to the first few lecture
sessions for the MIT class on introduction to data processing with Python and
found it quite engaging and, of course, very well done. I have some
accessibility issues regarding not being able to read what is being projected
onto the screen in the classroom, but I am still researching that point as it
is quite important for us blind folk. I think I will sign up for the class
as well so I can look through the homework assignments and tests.
I also took a brief look at some of the EDX offerings through other
universities and I see there are Python classes there as well. And, of
course, there are courses offered in all sorts of other technical areas to
tempt lifetime learners.
Thank you for forwarding this along to the list.
Richard

Dear Stephanie,
The other day, a colleague told me about her conversation with a remarkable
MITx learner. She spoke with Aditi Shah who plans to create the next
generation of cyber security tools. Shah’s a computer programmer and is also
blind.
Shah told us,
“I wanted to learn online, but my previous experience with massive open
online courses (MOOCs) had been unfavorable - I’m blind, and the lack of
accessible courses made learning online a struggle. My mentor suggested that
I check out edX, and after looking through the course catalog, I was thrilled
to see the amount of accessible content from the world’s best universities
and organizations. I signed up for MITx’s Introduction to Computer Science
and Programming Using Python - and I was blown away.
It was the first completely accessible course I’d ever taken online, and
perfectly coincided with my learning goals. After I finished that course, I
then took MITx’s Introduction to Computational Thinking and Data Science.
I’ve never been able to study math without sighted assistance in the past,
but on edX even this math-heavy course was readable to my screen reader. I
finished without any significant glitches!”
Because of what Shah has learned, she’s become a better employee, manager and
leader of her team. You can read her full story on the edX blog

Her experience is a testimony to the work and dedication the MIT faculty,
instructors, and staff pour into these courses to ensure similar great
educational experiences for all learners. Hearing this story also tells us
we’re making great progress in our mission to expand access to education
worldwide, but we have more work to do.
Over the next few weeks, we’ll share more inspiring learner stories with you
— which we hope will give you insight into an MITx community made of millions
of learners and uplift you in your lifelong educational journey. I’ll also
ask for your support

in a variety of ways and includes funding that directly supports the:
MIT faculty and departments who make their courses available to the world,
teaching assistants who provide in-course support and help for learners,
educational technologists who analyze, design, develop and evaluate online
tools to make learning easier,
media team that records and produces all the instructional videos which
enrich the learning experience,
intellectual property team which processes permissions to use copyrighted
materials,
accessibility team which makes MITx courses usable and accessible for
learners with disabilities.
Although people who purchase verified certificates help pay a portion of the
expense, the vast majority of learners don’t choose this option.
Support from MIT, MIT alumni, and friends help fund MITx. Please consider
being an active member of this circle of giving and invest in our mission
