Using manufacturer's suggested contrast settings on a color enlarger to get specific a specific log exposure range is much like using suggested developing times: they give a rough estimation that can be improved significantly by personal testing. The best thing I ever did with regards to bw printing was to calibrate my system such that I could change contrast in predictable ways without changing exposure. Thus, I could exposure for the light print values and filter for the darker ones. Paul Butzi outlines a way to do this at: http://www.butzi.net/articles/vcce.htm . This list's own Ralph Lambrecht (along with Chris Woodhouse), do an excellent job of explaining LERs and similar things in their book /Way Beyond Monochrome/.
