DEAR KEN,
In the past, when I shot an image that I thought would be popular or
sell I found that it wasn't very good and didn't sell. Since then I only
shoot what motivates or moves me emotionally. Some don't sell but most do.
It isn't a new concept in art that, the more deeply you get in touch with
what you, personally, love while making your photographs, the more universal
will be the appeal of the results.

It must be years since I replied to one of these posts and you
"Speedy" get this years reply.
Who are you shooting for? The ethereal "customer" who collects
your work because they like it?
Or You?
Personally I like every finished, matted print I've ever made. I
carefully conceived the print, shot it, printed it, Matte and framed
them. Are there shots that were dull and lifeless. You bet and I avoid
shooting during
the time of day they occurred. I had a hell of a time transitioning from
8x0 negs to 11x14 and then 14x17. Just could not get the
composition correct. Then it all got dialed in and things are fine.
But there are two sides to this. The sellable popular image and what
you like. Try shooting more of what you like and chill a bit.
My personal subjects are large mechanical antiques that still work.
Like steam ships and trains and Iron works, power plants etc...
My customer images are "nature scenes".
