You remember correctly. Antifog number 1 was bentotriazole:

Being something of a collector I bought another _Kodak Reference Handbook_ at a photo sale today. This one is the 1951 edition. In it is a _Kodak Photo Notes_ No.1, 1952, on the back page is a short article about modifying Microdol developer, the predecessor of Microdol-X by adding an organic anti-foggant. The article is entitled "Ultra-Fine Grain Possible With Microdol Modification" In it is stated that even finer grain than delivered by Microdol is possible with Plus-X by adding some Kodak Anti-Fog No.1 in the proportion of 2 tablets or one ounce of a 0.2% solution to a quart of developer. It is recommended that the film be agitated continuously in this developer and that one stop greater exposure be given than with untreated Microdol. Now, Microdol-X appears to be a Metol developer which contains sodium chloride as the fine grain agent. Of course, Microdol was discontinued long before MSDS were even an evil gleam so there is no way to know whether it was essentially the same as Microdol-X. I don't remember whether Kodak Anti-Fog No.1 was benzotriazole. I am drawing a blank on the other common organic restrainer. In any case I had always understood that packaged Microdol-X had a silver sequestering agent in it to prevent dichroic fog. It may well have that but I suspect it must also have the restrainer in it. As far as I can tell, Ilford Perceptol is identical to Kodak Microdol-X. Either will produce negatives on 100T-Max which are nearly as fine grained as the late, lamented, Technical Pan.
