The cost of film has gone up along with everything else. My preference
is TriX but I'm looking for something... cheaper.
Besides the Arista, the other two main options near that price point
seem to be Foma and Kentmere.
Fomapan is similarly priced to the Arista ($5.09, 135, 36exp, at
Freestyle). The Internet suggests its actually not quite a 400 speed
film. Reading around, it seems like some people love it and some people
don't. Foma is a Czech company, iirc. They also produce printing
paper, at least some of which is well respected.
Kentmere is slightly higher than Foma ($5.89, 135, 36exp, at Freestyle).
It is a Harman (makers of Ilford) product, their less expensive line.
Probably neither have the dynamic range of Tri-X. People produce good
work with both.
Buying 100' rolls and loading your own cartridges presumably reduces the
cost a bit further, of course.
