Dear Jerry,
The US Army sourced their cheese sandwiches from British Railways
buffet cars. Anything older than 1947 with a broken seal on the cellophane
packet was rejected but everything else was purchased. Many of these
sandwiches are going strong and expected to last well into 2050.
The additional purchase of little tins of warm apple juice to go with
the sandwiches was deferred - The army thought that soldiers might accept
the sandwiches if they could be served during artillery barrages but adding
the drinks was likely to be too much for the troops.
Uncle Dick
