With 4x5 and larger, forcing yourself to set up for a shot, composing, 
focussing etc. can be helpful too, even if you don't make the exposures.

It's as though going through the motions forces the creative circuits in the 
brain to get busy, and once they are active you begin to recognize all kinds of 
possibilities you didn't see before. If that is a plausible explanation, then 
the key is forcing yourself to make the kinds of aesthetic judgments and 
adjustments you need to create good images. 

So it might really be brain-warm-up or aesthetic-warm-up.
