If you want a good look into the depraved state of the arts establishment
in academia, read Kimball's "Rape Of The Masters". He takes on a number
of famous paintings, tells you why they are important, and they shows you
what the modern academic analysis looks like. It is funny in places and
it is rage inducing in others.
To my mind, Kimball remains the best arts critic around today, at least
in the US.
