It would be simpler but I tried that about 3-4 months ago and had some
trouble with pH stability that I traced to decomposition of the
metabisulfite with time.  Worked fine one shot or for a couple of weeks but
pH went up about 1 unit (7 to 8) in a month or two.  TEA and BA, however,
was quite stable.
