Bill,
Sorry, I just looked at your note again and noted the fact that you have the
PTR1. I have never been able to get the microphone that I recommended below to
work with my PTR1 -- only with my PTR2 and PT pocket. Therefore disregard my
previous statement.
I would not recommend any of the other microphones. They are special purpose
microphones designed primarily for live interviews and video applications.
An excellent overall microphone is the audio technica atm31a.
It uses a internal AA battery to get power and thus is not dependent on
obtaining power from the recorder. Sound Professionals was recently closing
them out for about $80. (I paid $200 for mine)
If you buy be sure and get a cable that adapts the XLR connector on the
microphone to a eighth inch phone for your recorders. Note, this is not a
stereo microphone. If you want an external microphone that is stereo and works
with the PTR1 you may have to also purchase a separate preamp.
Perhaps someone else knows of a better solution.

morning and found something that looks like a good deal. The Sony

For some reason many vendors on Ebay are liquidating this model for
between $6 and $10. I am not sure why. Checking on amazon customers
are paying between $40 and $50 and giving it very posative reviews.
