I went and looked on google for you Alan and it seems like 3dmax can use the files, and c4d/maya use a plugin for them. I think Eric is using c4d which has a page here: http://http.developer.nvidia.com/GPUGems/gpugems_ch34.html I don't use the programs tho but it seemed like you wanted this q answered so I tried to help, I might be off though.
