a couple of years ago i remember reading that cards stopped supporting
resolutions under 640x480 for hardware acceleration, so if you fired up
320x200 etc it would use software rendering and slow down.

it makes sense that the minimum resolution for hardware acceleration has
gone up since then, i bet thats what happened
