e: FAQ for the list

If I can remember what mine were...
1. What happens if I use the "reply to sender" command in my email program when replying to a post? The message will be sent to the list regardless of you replying to sender or to all.

2. What topics are acceptable?
You can ask any question about coding in any language. You can also ask about accessibility related to IDEs (integrated development environments), or how to use a specific IDE to accomplish a task (how can I use Visual Studio 2008 to compile a c++ application for Windows CE?

3. Is it okay to post off-topic messages as long as I indicate that they are off-topic, such as "OT: updating JFW"? This practice is frowned upon by the list. We understand that sometimes you have a question that is sort of related to programming and that you feel that this is the best place to ask it, but please consider alternatives, such as BlindCoolTech or BlindGeekZone first.

4. How strict is the off-topic policy?
The list generally looks after itself, with no designated moderator (unless messages get way out of hand). If you post an off-topic message, you will generally get responses telling you a better place to ask your question. If you persist in posting such messages, your email address will be reported to the moderator and you may be put on moderated status (each of your posts is checked before being allowed to pass to the list in general). Eventually, you may be banned from the list entirely.

It is horrible, but I forgot the rest of my ideas, sorry.

Have a great day,
Alex

Could you also post what you believe your answers to your
questions are,
which I will add to or leave the same. This will save me some
time writing
it all.
Thanks.

you could also add what is the policy about advertizing on the
list? What
other resources (lists, repositories, etc) are available?

Well...
1. What subjects are acceptable on this list?
2. How much can these be stretched (can you ask how to use an
IDE, for example)?
3. What happens if you post an off-topic message? Is this okay
if you mark the message with an indicator, such as "OT"?
4. What is the cross-posting policy?
5. If I reply to sender, what happens?
6. What is the average list traffic?
That is all I have for now.

Have a great day,
Alex

I think the best thing is to open t his up to the user community
and see
what they think we should include? What say all of you?

I would need to know what you wish to address. I would assume
things
like:
What is off topic for this list? What kind of topics are
discussed? etc.
Also, what format would you want it in, html?

As far as an FAQ, I would be happy to write it.

My two cents on this .... I think the recent list problems have
mainly
been due to how people have been using the list rather than due
to
limitations of the FreeLists technology, which seems to work
well for
the
JAWSScripts, Program-L, and other lists. I agree that is dumb
for
list
server software to get confused by the word "subscribe" in the
subject,
and other such anomalies, but think they have generally been
rare and
not
interfered with the general functioning of the list. I think
that
changing to Yahoo or Google sounds like it would create as many
problems
as it solves. I suggest we stay with FreeLists but try to
manage the
human interface better, including more regular intervention by
the
moderator, less flaming, and perhaps monthly reminders about
list
commands, and a FAQ if we can find a volunteer to write one.

Jamal
