Peter/Pratik,
Ironically, I just finished my dissertation specifically on designing
integrated development environments for the blind. I defend in about 2
weeks. I have a few papers published, a new one that is very relevant
submitted (VLHCC 2008), and I'd be happy to send you a copy of
whatever you might be interested in.
My dissertation gives a significant amount of detail about exactly how you can:
1) Run empirical tests to improve the human effectiveness of blind
programming environments.
2) Empirically measure the comprehension of auditory cues.
3) Build and design an effective blind programming environment.
The basic result of my dissertation is that I was able to show a blind
programming environment (called the Sonified Omniscient Debugger),
that allows blind programmers to complete programming tasks
"statistically just as quickly" as their sighted counterparts under
various conditions (Statistically non-differentiable from a sighted
user using a normal debugger). Specifically, I compared my environment
to Visual Studio 2005 + JAWS 9, and found that folks that were using
visual studio debugged programs 98.3% slower than a visual
environment, whereas in my environment they were 33% slower than in a
sighted environment, a significant difference and improvement.
Anyway, I'd be happy to talk to you more about it on or off list, or
I'd be happy to setup a conference call with someone on your research
team and tell you all about my work, things my work did not do, and
where some of the major holes in the literature still are.
