I had a conversation with the CTO of BookShare yesterday. My
understanding is that there has been an API for a few years, as you
indicate, but it was mainly information that BookShare gave privately to
certain developers. I think he said the public developer site was
launched around CSUN time. I had not heard of it even then, so thought
the info was worth sharing.

BTW, he also mentioned that a BookShare iOS app is now waiting for Apple
approval at the iTunes store, and an Android one is being developed by
volunteers, though that is further off before release.

Um twe have been using bookshare's api for years on the Braille+ and it
could have been used for other mobile devices even then.

I just learned yesterday that BookShare has launched a public API.
Among other things, this supports development of book searching and
reading apps on mobile devices.
