Otis, before any of us make any replies (or I hope so) we need you to answer some questions, and even then your going to get a plethora of responses, each author displaying the excellent properties of why there choice in programming languages is best.

1. what do you intend to do your programming for? web, or desktop, phones, or handhelds,
2. for what operating system, simian, Linux, windows, Mac?
3. and what kind of programming (type of applications) do you wish to program, data base applications, OS tools, music programs, etc.

I run a site that may help you choose a language, its called the fruit basket demo site, and it has a similar program done in a number of languages, including where ever possible a executable version of the app, the files used to create it, and if you enter on the language name a sheet will pop up that gives a general description of the language.
you will find this at:

some folks can't understand the syntax of some languages, and feel right at home with others, which is why I took over and generated the site, so you can take a look see at the languages and figure out (hopefully) which one fits your minds way of thinking.

Hi everyone,

I would like to get some suggestions from some professional programmers on
the list. I want to learn how to write software programs. What books would
I need to start reading to learn how to create software?

Thank you,
