Hi,
I'm sure this is unhelpful, but I do not think I am technical enough to
understand this stuff. I'll just say what I want and hope someone can say
something helpful. I want to teach myself JavaScript and node.js. I want a
space that is not on my computer to practice. I was also thinking of playing
around with static site generators like Jekyll and so on, just to get the
experience of seeing how they work and learning that workflow.

Whilst I agree there is a lot to learn, some things make is easier. I would
advise using a tool that can manage your infrastructure such as HashiCorp's
Terraform:

Also, depending on what you are doing, using CloudFlare to enhance security:

There is also a price calculator you can use to make an estimate, it
is in their webiste. I remember using it. If you are still not sure
and just want to do a test.... they allow you to try for free for a year. If
you are stil unsure... they created a service that has a
fixed cost, just can't remember the name of that service.... but as
Aaron said you must first decide what do you need. Be ready to
learn a lot because AWS has a lot of configurations and rules... In my previous
job we had gave all those tasks to the network admin guy to take care.
Nowadays I prefer bluemix or heroku clouds, much much easier to use....
