Dear Colleagues,
Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), Mumbai, under the
National Initiative on Undergraduate Science (NIUS - Physics) is happy to
announce a 3-day Workshop for physics teachers from high school, junior
college, UG and Physics Education Researchers on “Active Learning (ALOP)
and Experimental Problem Solving in Physics”. The workshop will be held at
HBCSE, Mumbai during January, 10 - 12, 2018.
The workshop will be facilitated by Prof. David Sokoloff from the
University of Oregon, USA (https://physics.uoregon.edu/profile/sokoloff/)
and Dr. Rajesh Khaparde from the HBCSE-TIFR, MUMBAI. (
http://www.hbcse.tifr.res.in/people/academic/rajesh-b-khaparde).
This workshop will have sessions from the UNESCO program Active Learning in
Optics and Photonics (ALOP) (sponsored by ICTP and SPIE). The entire 6
module lab manual (about 270 page) will be given to all the participants.
The participants will get the first hand experience of two entire ALOP
modules, which includes experiments, demonstrations and activities
that teachers can use in their schools/colleges. Further, the participants
will be introduced to the basic idea of Procedural Understanding (PU) and
Experimental Problem Solving (EPS) in Physics. There will be lab sessions,
design and practice sessions on EPS during which each participant will work
on given tasks. Also EPS as an assessment tool will be discussed. Teachers
will be given written material on important aspects of training in
Experimental physics and EPS. Teachers will be briefly introduced to a set
of simple experimental problems in optics, electricity and magnetism.
There is no registration fee, free accommodation and local hospitality will
be provided. Participants will have to spend for their travel to and from
Mumbai. For participating in this workshop interested teachers and
