Seventy-three blind people will soon be out of a job so who is next?

I speak openly and without the slightest hesitation apology or regret.

You only have to look at what's going on with shires around Australia
and use logical common sense.

For instance, let me say I would totally disagree with this happening,
but most sensible shires have community health centres.

Most of these community health centres have got at least one
occupational therapist on staff. Perhaps not every day of the week
but they are out there.

O T as they are referred too these days all undertake the same basic
training. It is true some people specialise in a particular
disability field however this is usually done after basic training.

If we are to use logical common sense, there would eventually be no
need for any blindness agency or service provider to maintain any of
these people on their staff, since the only advantage of doing so is
that these people are in daily contact with specialist services and
equipment.

There is nothing to prevent staff at shire community health centres
from knowing or learning about these specialist services or equipment
since they've already completed some basic training in the field of
insuring blind people are able to maintain or obtain an almost
independent lifestyle.

Let me clearly repeat if blindness services sacked their o t staff, it
would not be a decision I would support whatsoever, but there's
nothing stopping agencies from doing so, because logical arguments
could easily be used to demonstrate the ongoing costs of duplicating
services.

I've been around long enough to know governments on all sides of
politics hate duplicating services and if they can find ways of saming
money and also maintaining a service they'll goe to any lengths
possible.

As for blindless agencies saying they'll do everything possible to
find alternatives for these 73 blind people, just exactly where do
they think they're going to find these alternatives?

Surely if employees are no longer doing work there is or will
eventually be no need to maintain absolutely any management staff of
the companies or work places they are closing.

And you blind person or I blind person could be next.

I wonder how we would feel if suddenly our 2 remaining libraries were to close?

Think about this one blind people. Most decent shires do at least
have some audio books in their libraries. Some shires are attempting
to put out of copyright materials on their websites.

Could there one day be any logical argument to suggest our 2 remaining
specialist libraries should close or perhaps merge?

We have already seen a heads of agreement merger between 2 mobility
providers, what if anything is there to stop any government insisting
that all mobility services for the blind become one service only?

Or what would stop disability care Australia from insisting that
mobility sevices being done by local shires.

What numbers would a local shire need to make this sort of service a
viable service?

For instance, would there have to be 10 blind people in a shire before
they provided such a service or would the number be higher and what if
there was only one person in that shire and then that person suddenly
dies and for the next 5 years nobody used the service and then a blind
person moved in but there was no service.

It's time for serious action.

Do not wait for Blind Citizens Australia.

If you live in Melbourne get yourself down to Flinders Street Station
this Sunday at 12 pm and take part in a peaceful and positive
demonstration.

If you do not come, it is a pity for you, because your service just
could be the next to go.

Do not expect to be consulted about it either.

So join this demonstration, if not for the sake of supporting these 73
blind people but more importantly to stop agencies from taking away
your services without consultation.

As for Vision Australia's claim about being the leading blindness
services provider, I just want to know where is all the money going?

Specialists schools gone, land sold or perhaps given back to
governments, offices closing, adult services such as xocial workers
either very few or don't exist, enterprises which have employed blind
people in many cases for many years suddenly closing and from what I'm
hearing no financial compensation for absolutely any of what I'm sure
have been hard working people, not to mention that from what I'm
hearing lazy management who haven't gone out of their way to insure
steady work for the employees in the first place.

Let me be the first to say that whilst I rung a books list, I would be
extremely happy to facilitate discussions in relation to this post or
anything else to do with Vision australia or any other blindness
services provider not that there are many these days.

If it comes down to simple economics alone, soon the only service
provider will be disability care Australia and nothing else.

Is that what we want as people who are blind?

By all means anyone and everyone is welcome to join the people who
love books list.

It's time we told Tony and Kevin a positive message.

What is that message?

Insure we clients are consulted when service providers are thinking or
talking about closing a service. Insure clients are told the truth as
to why the service can't be maintained. Insure finances money and
costs are not the only considerations used to justify closing a
service. Insure a standard of service is maintained particularly
given the aging population so as people who go blind have a specialist
service to assist them. Insure advocacy agencies EG BCA will take a
stronger stance in relation to speaking publicly and positively about
the standards of service providers they claim to be advocates for the
clients of those service providers.

As for BCA and VA having this so called memo of understanding or
whatever it's called I've heard some crap in my life but BCA is an
advocacy agency, it should be completely independent of any other
blind agency and has the responsibility as a so called national body
to constructively and publicly do so of criticising any other service
provider, otherwise, it's a complete waste of government funding.
