Dale run HijackThis and see if it shows anything related to 
this.  Better yet, just post the log results here.

I doubt the Hosts file would cause this, unless it was indeed 
malware and it wrote in the Hosts file some kind of "wildcard" 
for all websites.  Yeah you shouldn't "delete" the Hosts file, 
just rename it.  IE will still "work the same" without it, what 
will happen is if there are any bad websites listed in it, 
those sites will have access to your PC.
