This is from a known and trusted source - I have a program on my computer - and unzip RAR files fine. My son must have put a program on here for them when he built my computer - I didn't put one on, but have always been able to unzip them, and it is in my right click menu. It wasn't listed in my program files, so I thought maybe it had come with winXP. I'll check out some of the programs everyone mentioned for my neighbor - and I'll check with my son! thank you! cris ----- Original Message ----- From: Tech Rose - LoveBytes To: pctechtalk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Wednesday, June 29, 2005 5:55 PM Subject: -=PCTechTalk=- Re: winxp - RAR files a .rar file is a WinRar file. It is like winzip. It is a compressed file, like a .Zip file. I do not think Win Zip Opens .Rar files. Here is a link to the program: http://www.rarlab.com/ WinRan can open Zip files. A word of warning. Compressed files 'can' have virus's in them. I would be sure I KNEW who the file was from and ask the person if they sent them. My Norton will scan the compressed file as it comes into my mailbox, so I know it has been scanned by the time I see it. I had received one last week that Norton gave me an adware warring on. So, forewarned is forearmed...I hope. Hope this helps... She received RAR files. On her computer, it claims they are to be opened in adobe acrobat reader - which, of course, won't open them. She does not seem to have a program to open them. I don't recall putting a program on my computer that opens them - I just get the option with a right mouse click. Does anyone know what she needs to open them? Is it a setting in winXP ? thanks! cris -- <Please delete this line and everything below.> To unsub or change your email settings: //www.freelists.org/webpage/pctechtalk To access our Archives: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PCTechTalk/messages/ //www.freelists.org/archives/pctechtalk/
