POP3 will likely work fine. Your SMTP may or may not work fine. If your friends internet provider is the same as yours, you have a far better chance of being able to Send Mail To People. If not, your odds just got a lot worse. Many providers prevent or severely limit access to their SMTP servers from outside their own network. Some will even limit POP3 access. As far as I know, all ISPs provide a web interface to substitute for POP3/SMTP. This is one reason why many folks buy email service from independent services like Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail and others.
