Thanks, Ed.  I have rebooted a thousand times since this began.  It just 
started one day and never left.  I turn everything off entirely every night, 
and every time I leave the house for any great length of time, so it gets 
rebooted regularly.

You are certainly right - a reboot often solves what ails the PC!    : )
