yeah it was MS, it was IE 7..............which I finally gave into and
installed for the 2nd time and then just kept it after that, lol. it thought
IE 7 was critical I guess even tho I didn't ;-)
i just realized ever since i marked it to just automatically d/l and install
the updates, the shield doesn't show up in my notification area any
more........i've been so busy i didn't even realize.

i just went thru windows update and chose "custom" and let it look for updates
and it does show something for this .net 3.5. so am i to understand this is
something that i should not install? it doesn't call it critical, but high
priority. i just haven't had time to read many emails so haven't followed this
thread..............actually haven't been on the pc a whole lot period. i've
been taking time away from the pc and trying to take time to take care of me
:-).

Sandy in Florida.........where we're having another freeze tonight, but only to
around 29 degrees this time.

Sandy,
Are you positive that this one you 'weren't interested in' was a
Microsoft update? I'm extremely curious as to what it was since that method
(tell me, but don't automatically install) only presents the Critical ones
and those are being offered in order to protect you and your system from
crackers or newly discovered bugs.

The idea behind having Windows Updates tell you that something is
available but not install it automatically is to give you the opportunity to
make sure there are no known problems with the offerings. You can do that
by asking right here in the group, but you need to handle them right then
and there. Setting up the options like this is not meant as a way to put
off getting your system patched. In just about all cases (the .NET 3.5 one
is a rare exception), the only things you will be offered through that small
yellow shield in your Notification Area are the ones that are rated Critical
and the faster you can get them installed, the safer your system will be.

If you now have it set to install them without asking, then yes, you're
basically only getting the critical patches. I am VERY curious, however, as
to why you don't also have this .NET 3.5 update. Maybe it's only being
offered to those who have their WU set to ask for permission first. Very
odd! lol

And I'm sorry to hear about your frozen pipe adventure. We go through
that all the time here in Michigan, but we're used to that and take measures
every year to prevent it from happening.

Peace,
Gman
