Found this from the past posts, I think I hit Del at just the right time. I do
have the shortcut but don't remember if it is this one.

Changing the title so my question doesn't get lost.

I know this has been on the list before but I never paid
attention until now. How do you go into Safe Mode?

Ok, challenged one, we all been there too.
here it is step by step as I posted to my group:

Here is how you can create a desktop shortcut that when clicked will
automatically boot you into Safe Mode. I tested this on Windows 95, 98 but
should work in Me too.

Right click your desktop and choose New>Shortcut.

In the command line enter this command:
WIN /D:M

Click Next, choose any name you want for the shortcut.
Click Next and choose your icon.
Click Finish.

Right click your new shortcut and go to Properties.

Click the Program tab and then the Advanced tab.

Put a checkmark next to MS-DOS Mode
Remove the checkmark from "Warn before entering MS-DOS Mode"

Click OK
And that's it. Now, whenever you need or want to get into Safe Mode (ie -
as for a defrag) just double click the icon.

LOL Pat! I had this problem with a new laptop recently! it took me 6 tries
to get into safe mode because the system was so darned fast! try this...
boot, just after the info on your video card displays, hit the pause/break
key, then enter, then keep tapping the delete key or F2 or whatever to get
to the boot menu.
